Statement on the Purchase of Mayoral Vehicle

Following some misleading media reports, we feel it is important to clear the air as follows:

It is true that the municipality is in the process of procuring an official vehicle for the Mayor’s Office. The car does not belong to an individual and it falls within the fleet of the municipality. 

We are currently renting a car for the Office of the Mayor at a higher cost because the old mayoral car has reached its lifespan and it is not economical viable to repair it. As compared to renting, buying becomes a cheaper option at the long run.

We want to put it on record that due procurement procedures were followed when purchasing the vehicle as it was budgeted for. Community members were requested to make inputs during the budget consultation meetings and no objections were raised. All requirements for the Municipal Finance Management Act were adhered to.

Some of the people who are now objecting through the media seat in the finance portfolio committee and they were part of the decision. They did not object when the decision was discussed in the Executive Committee. Council, as the highest decision-making body approved the purchase as it went through all the committees and procurement procedures.

Furthermore, buying a reliable vehicle for the Mayor’s Office is part of service delivery as the office will be able to execute its duties with ease.
