A prolific athlete and employee of Musina Municipality, Lillian Muleya has put her municipality on the continental map after taking the first position in a 10km race during the Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) marathon in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. Lillian was competing with fellow municipal employees from various municipalities in South Africa, Zambia, Swaziland and Namibia.

An experienced athlete, Lillian takes the title for the third time in succession after winning it in Mahikeng, North West, last year. She had also won the same title in Lesotho in 2015.

She said after winning the gold medal. “I knew I was going to win the race because I had trained very hard in preparation for this race. The most important thing is to be positive and be fully prepared at all times. I’m just happy that I have continued to put my municipality on the lime light. I have no doubt that I will defend the title during the same competitions in Swaziland next year. ”

Muleya said although she was confident, she was nervous at first because there was a high number of participants during the race. “I thought the competition would be very tough because we were more than 100 when we started the race. But as the race progressed, I realized that there was nothing to worry about as I opened a big gap shortly after thereafter. As the crowds were cheering, I gathered more courage and felt like I was flying on the air. I was so encouraged that I was not even tired when the race finished after the 10km.”

She said she has plans of participating in professional races across the country. “I am physically and spiritually prepared to use my talent professionally. There is no doubt that I have the potential of becoming one of the top athletes in the country.”

Municipal spokesperson, Wilson Dzebu said he is proud of Muleya’s performance. “She is our brand ambassador who continues to carry our flag high. The municipality is very pleased to have an employee of her caliber. We will continue to give her full support so that she can be able to bring more silverware back home.”
