Gumela village was uplifted to a royal palace status when King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and his huge entourage arrived. Gumela, which was inherited from the defunct Mutale, now falls under Ward 7 of Musina Municipality.

Mphephu visited the local Mamphodo High School as part of his back to school campaign. Much to their excitement, the villagers and learners were showered with gifts which included calendars bearing Mphephu’s image, T-shirts and caps.

“We need young people who would be able to lead this country with wisdom and distinction. That is why I take education very seriously.” Said Mphephu when addressing villagers, learners, educators and guests who graced the occasion.

Mphephu said it is a known fact that Vhembe boasts some of the most intelligent people in the world. “We are naturally very wise and gifted people from creation. This can be proved by the fact that we have many people from Vhembe who are holding high positions regionally, provincially, nationally and worldwide. It is important for us to continue this trend by encouraging our learners to take education seriously. My schedule is very busy but I decided to come here today to encourage our leaders of tomorrow. Education is the only foundation that can bring prosperity to our land.”

He encouraged learners from poor families not to be discouraged by their poor financial background. “If you pass Grade 12 well, there are several bursaries that are waiting for you.  My office also offer bursaries to students who pass well. Besides that, municipalities, government and the private sector has abundant bursaries for you. I hope my presence here today will ignite you to work hard and pass well at the end of the year.”

Thovhele Ratshibvumo II Rambuda, who accompanied the King, said: “Our beloved King is leading by example and it rests amongst all traditional leaders to encourage their subjects to take education seriously. As head of the Rambuda traditional authority, I have also led various educational initiatives for my subjects. Indeed, the only wealth that does not fade away is education.”

Musina Mayor, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope welcomed the visit by the King with open hands. “We also came here as Musina Municipality to support the initiatives of the King. We strongly believe in the cooperation with traditional leaders to accelerate service delivery for our people.”
