More than 500 girls from Tshikundamalema High School, outside Masisi received boxes of sanitary pads enough to supply them for the next six months from the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs Mr Jerry Ndou and Musina Mayor, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope.

Ndou, who adopted the school last year, congratulated last year’s Grade12 learners who achieved 71% pass rate. “We can all see that this is a rural school that does not have modern infrastructure. The teachers, school governing body and parents are working hard to uplift the standard of their children’s education here. All these learners come from indigent families and despite limited resources, they are doing their best in terms of educational performance. To them, a library is a luxury which they never saw but their courage to succeed encourages us to give them full support.”

He said learners should never allow their poor backgrounds to dictate their future. “Study hard and give yourself time to do school work. Success starts during the first day at the beginning of the academic year. Listen to your teachers and stay away from bad friends who will influence you to drink alcohol and abuse drugs. Your educational dreams should be based on hard work, dedication and the desire to succeed. There is no need to worry about your future because there are plenty of bursaries waiting for you out there. The most important thing is for you to produce good results.”

Early last year, Ndou visited the school and realized that there was a serious shortage of ablution facilities. He promised to build toilets for the school and construction is now nearing completion. “I’m happy that you will soon be able to use the toilets I committed last year. Education is one of the major priorities of our government and we will continue to support our schools to produce good results.” He said.

Musina Mayor, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope said the municipality is working with various stakeholders to improve learning conditions in schools. “That is why we are also here to support this initiative.”
