“I was supposed to catch a taxi to Musina and pay a R100 return fee next week. As a parent who survives on child support grant, I have saved that money because my service delivery problems have been resolved.” These were the words of Mususumeli Munyai of Tanda village. She was speaking gladly after the Musina Municipality Mayoral Imbizo that recently took place at her village.

Munyai is one of the ordinary community members who had the opportunity to personally interact with their political representatives and government leaders during the event. Tanda village falls under Ward 1 of Musina Municipality.

When addressing villagers, Mayor Mihloti Muhlope said the municipality hosts services delivery interaction sessions with community members timeously. “This is in line with the government’s Batho Pele principles which compel us to put people first.  The wealth of the municipality is our people and we have to make sure that they are treated with dignity and affection.”

The mayor said the political and management teams of the municipality visit all the areas to compile reports on people’s complaints and compliments. “It is good that we keep on receiving positive feedback from members of the community. Where there are gaps, we make sure that they are filled as urgently as possible. This also helps us to address service delivery backlogs effectively by involving the affected community members and stakeholders.”

She said the invitation to government departments and stakeholders to the imbizo clearly demonstrates that the municipality prioritizes partnerships to enhance service delivery.

Stakeholders who made presentations and render services include the Department of Home Affairs, Health, Public Protector, Social Development and the South African Police Services. The mayor said issues that are directly linked to the municipality will be attended urgently.  “Those which are not our competency will be forwarded to the relevant departments and stakeholders for attention.”
